The Resilience Blueprint

The Power of Taking Small Steps

If something is not working in your life, then change is good. Even more than that, it’s 100% necessary which might seem like stating the obvious, but have you ever met someone who wants something different from life, yet they’re still doing the same thing over and over. Or are you guilty of this yourself?

(Fun fact; nearly 99.9999% of us are guilty of this at one point or another)

Einstein was the one credited with saying that the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again yet expect different results – and he was a pretty smart cookie so probably worth listening to.

While this solution of change is fairly simple, it does have a tendency to trip many of us up.

And the reason is?

We go too big, too much, too soon, then we crash and burn and wonder why, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

One of the situations that most people can relate to when it comes to this, is health and fitness and as a Gym owner I see it all the time.

People come in and they’re all fired up and they really want to change their lives so they dive into everything at 110%. They come in every day, the eat nothing but chicken and broccoli and then it happens.

THE CRASH

And not only do they fall off the wagon, but they allow it to run over them a couple of times because they’re just so despondent that they failed. But did they fail? No. Did they go too hard to soon and the crash was inevitable? Yes. So is there a better way of doing it? Yes.

SMALL CHANGES

Two words with massive benefits. You see doing things bit by bit has been shown to be effective for most people. It allows you to adjust to the changes without everything being so overwhelming. Think of it like building a house.

You wouldn’t just dump all the bricks in a huge pile and say ‘done’, you’d lay them down brick by brick until your house was built, and life is no different to this.

The same principles can be applied in business. There are so many things to do and continually learn, that it’s easy to get overwhelmed if you try and do everything at once. However, having said all of that, if you’re the exception to the rule, then sure, change everything at once. But if you’re like most people, then break things down into manageable chunks. You’ll get better at things a lot quicker this way and the changes you need to happen will occur without you becoming a puddle on the floor.
